Table Size: Getting It Right
The standard pub pool table is 7ft (playing surface about 6ft x 3ft). This is the size used in leagues and tournaments, so players know what to expect.
Space required: You need about 5ft clear space around the table for cue action. That's roughly 16ft x 12ft minimum. Measure twice!
Some venues opt for 6ft tables in tight spaces, but serious players prefer 7ft. If you're hoping to host leagues, go 7ft.
Table Quality Matters
A cheap pool table is false economy. Poor-quality tables warp, the cloth wears fast, and coin mechanisms jam. Players notice and stop playing.
What to Look For
- Solid slate bed: Not MDF. Slate stays flat and plays true.
- Good quality cloth: Speed cloth lasts longer and plays better than cheap felt.
- Rubber cushions: Proper cushion rubber gives consistent bounce.
- Reliable coin mech: Nothing kills a pool table's earning faster than a jammed coin slot.
Placement: Where to Put It
The best spot for a pool table is:
- Visible from the bar — players see others playing and want a game
- Away from thoroughfares — people walking past mid-shot is annoying
- Good lighting — ideally with a dedicated table light
- Level floor — uneven floors make for bad play (we can shim to compensate)
Coin Pricing
Standard pub play is £1-2 per game. Higher prices work in city centres; lower in village locals. We'll advise based on your area.
Some venues do free pool on quiet nights to drive bar sales. Worth considering if midweek trade is slow.
Maintenance
Pool tables need regular attention:
- Cloth brushing — keeps the surface clean and fast
- Re-clothing — typically every 12-18 months depending on use
- Cushion replacement — less frequent, but eventually needed
- Level checks — buildings settle; tables need re-levelling
With our profit share arrangement, all maintenance is included. You don't pay for re-clothing or repairs.
League Potential
If you've got the space, hosting a pool league is a great way to guarantee midweek footfall. League nights typically mean full tables, busy bar, and players who come back every week.
We can help connect you with local leagues if you're interested.
